Rocklands Eco Retreat is located in Rocklands in the northern Cederberg Mountains, off the R364 near Clanwilliam in South Africa’s Western Cape. The retreat is surrounded by sandstone mountains, fynbos and the internationally known Rocklands bouldering area.
Rocklands is just over three hours by car from Cape Town, depending on your starting point, traffic and road conditions. We recommend allowing extra time for stops on the journey.
Clanwilliam is the nearest main town for supermarkets, fuel, pharmacies and other everyday supplies. We recommend doing your main grocery shop before arriving at the retreat.
Cape Town International Airport is the main airport for reaching Rocklands Eco Retreat. From the airport, continue north towards Clanwilliam and the Cederberg by rental car.
Yes, a car is strongly recommended. Rocklands is a rural mountain destination with very limited public transport, and having your own vehicle makes it much easier to reach climbing areas, hiking destinations, shops and other parts of the Cederberg.
No. A 4×4 is not required to stay at Rocklands Eco Retreat. Guests without a suitable vehicle can park at the lower parking area and walk approximately 250 metres uphill to the cabin.
Suitable vehicles can use the rough access track towards the cabin, but the track is natural, rocky and not maintained like a conventional road. Guests with vehicles that are not suitable for the track should park at the lower parking area.
The walk is approximately 250 metres uphill from the lower parking area to the cabin. We recommend packing luggage that you can comfortably carry over uneven natural terrain.
We recommend arriving during daylight whenever possible, especially on your first visit. Rocklands is a rural mountain area and the final access is much easier to understand and navigate in daylight.
The retreat is located off the R364 in the Rocklands area near Clanwilliam. Use the location information supplied with your booking. The Google Maps Pin has been very reliable so far.
Rocklands Eco Retreat is located in the Rocklands area of the northern Cederberg, close to protected and privately managed areas that form part of the wider Cederberg landscape. Different hiking and climbing areas have their own access and permit requirements.
Yes — intentionally so. The retreat is surrounded by mountains and nature rather than shops, restaurants and urban infrastructure, while Clanwilliam remains accessible when you need supplies.

Grasslang is the current two-person cabin at Rocklands Eco Retreat, designed as a private retreat for couples or solo travellers. It combines indoor living with a large outdoor deck, mountain views and outdoor bathing.
Currently we have only one cabin on site for two people. Grasslang accommodates a maximum of two guests. It is designed primarily for couples or solo travellers looking for a private stay in nature.

The cabin has a private kitchen with a refrigerator incl. small freezer compartment and a stovetop for everyday self-catering. Guests planning longer stays should bring the groceries and speciality ingredients they need from Clanwilliam or Cape Town.
Yes. Grasslang has its own private bathroom, including a toilet and bidet. The cabin also extends the bathing experience outdoors.

No. Grasslang does not have air conditioning. A fan is provided, and the cabin relies primarily on natural ventilation and the generally dry Cederberg climate. Summer can nevertheless become very hot, particularly from late February through beginning of March, so guests who are sensitive to heat should keep this in mind when booking.
Yes, there is a gas heater for cold winter evenings to make it cozy.
The retreat is currently not ideal for guests with significant mobility limitations. Access involves natural, uneven terrain and guests without a suitable vehicle may need to walk approximately 250 metres uphill to the cabin. Please contact us before booking if accessibility is a concern.
We are planning on constructing a wheelchair friendly cabin, once the access road has been built.
Yes. Grasslang’s bed can be lifted towards the outdoor living area, allowing you to bring your sleeping experience closer to the Cederberg night sky when the weather is suitable.

Yes. The refrigerator includes a small freezer compartment, useful for ice, frozen food and supplies during longer self-catering stays or just to enjoy ice-cream on a hot summer day.
Grasslang has both a French press and a moka pot, so you can prepare proper coffee during your stay without needing to bring coffee-making equipment.
Our favourite ground coffee is waiting for you. Enjoy it on the stoep with the mountains in front of you.
Yes. Grasslang has a private indoor and an outdoor shower, both are designed so that you can shower surrounded by the Cederberg landscape while still enjoying privacy.

No, not particularly. Rocklands Eco Retreat is not a nudist or naturist resort. It is simply an exceptionally private place where you can relax, feel comfortable and be yourself.

Yes. Rocklands Eco Retreat operates off-grid, with electricity generated by solar power and water sourced from a natural spring and borehole.
Electricity is supplied by the retreat’s solar system. Because the cabin is off-grid, electricity is a finite resource and should be used more consciously than in a conventional urban home or hotel.
The cabin is not dependent on the conventional electricity grid, so normal grid load shedding does not directly determine whether the cabin has power.
No, unfortunately high powered electrical appliances such as hairdryers, electric kettle etc. cannot be used at Rocklands Eco Retreat.
Water at Rocklands Eco Retreat comes from a natural spring and borehole. Water is therefore a local natural resource and guests are asked to use it responsibly.
Yes. The tap water at Rocklands Eco Retreat is safe to drink. Our water comes from the property’s natural spring and borehole system, is filtered and has been tested for drinking quality. Feel free to refill your reusable water bottles directly at the cabin.
Yes. Please use water mindfully. Rocklands Eco Retreat is an off-grid property in a naturally dry mountain environment, so responsible water use helps protect the retreat’s limited resources.

No. Rocklands Eco Retreat is completely off-grid and therefore does not depend on Eskom’s electricity supply. Grasslang generates and stores its own electricity through the property’s solar system.
No. Hairdryers and similar high-powered heating appliances are not suitable for Grasslang’s off-grid solar system. Please leave hairdryers, electric kettles and other high-consumption heating devices at home.
Yes. High-speed Wi-Fi is available at Grasslang, allowing guests to remain connected despite the retreat’s remote location.

Grasslang has high-speed internet delivered through a fixed wireless microwave network. The connection is relayed via line-of-sight dishes across several farms before connecting to a larger network tower.
In real-world use, the connection has handled three simultaneous Microsoft Teams video calls without issues, making it very suitable for normal remote work and video conferencing.

Yes. Grasslang offers several comfortable places to work, including the breakfast bar and the outdoor stoep. Combined with high-speed Wi-Fi, this makes the cabin well suited to longer remote-working stays.
Mobile reception is available but varies significantly across the property. MTN generally offers the strongest coverage, while Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom may only work in certain spots. The outdoor stoep is one area where reception is often available. For reliable connectivity at the cabin, use the Wi-Fi.
Yes. Grasslang is particularly well suited to longer self-catering stays, combining a private kitchen, workspace, high-speed Wi-Fi and outdoor space with direct access to the Rocklands landscape.
Yes. Video conferencing works very well at Grasslang. We have successfully had three Microsoft Teams video calls running simultaneously without any issues.
As with any rural network, absolute uptime can never be guaranteed, but the connection is comfortably suitable for normal remote work.

In some areas you can easily bring your dog to the bouldering areas. CapeNature and individual landowners have their own access rules, and dogs are prohibited in some protected and rehabilitation areas. Always check the rules for the specific sector before taking your dog.
In some areas it is not a problem taking your dog on a hike. The hike to the Brandwyn waterfalls next door can easily be done with your dog. Just note, dogs are not permitted in many CapeNature-managed wilderness areas and trails. Check the rules for your intended hiking area before leaving the retreat with your dog.

The main Rocklands bouldering season runs through the cooler months, broadly from May to October. June, July and August are particularly popular because cooler temperatures generally provide better climbing conditions and friction.

Yes. Bouldering sites at our neighbours Rocklands Basecamp are less than 5 minutes away by foot. Bouldering sites at Alpha Excelsior Farm are about 10 minutes by foot.
Rocklands sectors are spread across a relatively large landscape, so travel time depends on where you climb. It is between a 5 minute walk and a 5 minute drive plus 5 to 15 minutes of walking.
Access conditions in Rocklands can change following wildfires and ecological rehabilitation. Check CapeNature’s current Rocklands access information before every trip and respect all closures, marked paths and conservation restrictions.
Yes. Crash-pad rental is available locally in Rocklands, including through neighbouring climbing businesses and farms such as Rocklands Basecamp, Alpha Excelsior, Traveller’s Rest and de Pakhuys.
During the busy winter climbing season, however, booking pads in advance is recommended, as rental stock can become limited. Rocklands Basecamp currently advertises pad rental, while Alpha Excelsior also advertises crash-pad and climbing-shoe rentals.
We do not offer crash pads ourselves.
Rocklands Basecamp is one of our immediate neighbours and its bouldering areas are less than approximately five minutes away on foot. This makes Grasslang particularly convenient for climbers who want private accommodation while remaining within walking distance of climbing.
Bouldering areas on Alpha Excelsior Farm are approximately a ten-minute walk from Rocklands Eco Retreat. Other sectors throughout Rocklands are generally reached with a very short drive followed by an approach on foot.
Yes. Professional climbing and guiding services are available locally. Rocklands Basecamp operates specifically as a climbing and guiding hub and can assist with local climbing logistics and guiding enquiries.

Yes. For many CapeNature-managed trails, wilderness areas, as well as the trails on private property a permit is required. Permit requirements depend on the destination, so check the rules for the specific trail before setting out. You can get them at the farm offices at de Pakhuys and Travellers Rest Camp directly as well as at the Cape Nature Office.
The wider Cederberg is known for destinations such as Wolfberg Arch, the Wolfberg Cracks, the Maltese Cross, the Sevilla Rock Art Trail and Algeria Waterfalls alongside numerous shorter walks and wilderness routes. These destinations are not all immediately beside Rocklands, so plan travel time and permits separately.
Yes. The Cederberg contains important ancient San rock-art sites. Well-known nearby sites include the Sevilla Rock Art Trail, approximately five minutes away by car, and the Stadsaal Caves further into the Cederberg. Treat all rock art as irreplaceable cultural heritage: never touch, wet, trace or damage paintings and follow access requirements at each site.
Absolutely. Guests visit the area for hiking, photography, stargazing, birdlife, fynbos, rock art, cycling, rooibos tea tastings, wine and olive oil tastings, quiet days in nature and simply slowing down at the cabin.
Yes. Rocklands is an exceptional place for stargazing because of its remote location, very low light pollution and clear Cederberg skies. On dark, moonless nights, the Milky Way can be clearly visible to the naked eye, together with thousands of stars that disappear almost completely from urban skies.
Grasslang is particularly well positioned because the cabin faces south towards the Southern Hemisphere sky. Depending on the season and time of night, you can look for the Southern Cross, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Carina region and the dark Coalsack nebula near the Southern Cross.
During the cooler months, roughly May to September, the bright central region of the Milky Way becomes especially spectacular. At Rocklands’ latitude, the galactic centre can pass almost directly overhead, creating extraordinary conditions for naked-eye stargazing and astrophotography. During summer, constellations such as Orion become prominent, while the Magellanic Clouds are particularly rewarding in the southern sky.
Moon phase matters enormously. For the darkest sky and the clearest view of the Milky Way, plan around a new moon and allow your eyes around 20–30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. Even without a telescope, the difference from a city night sky can be remarkable.
Rocklands Eco Retreat sits beneath a Bortle Class 2 dark sky, meaning there is extremely little artificial light pollution. On clear, moonless nights the Milky Way can be visible in exceptional detail with the naked eye.

Yes. Under sufficiently dark, clear conditions, both the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds can be visible to the naked eye from the Cederberg. These two neighbouring dwarf galaxies can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere and far southern latitudes, making them particularly special for visitors from Europe and much of North America.
At Rocklands’ latitude, both remain geometrically above the horizon throughout the year, although their height in the sky, moonlight, weather and the surrounding mountain horizon affect how easily they can be seen.
Yes. The natural setting and outdoor spaces are well suited to independent yoga, stretching and meditation. Climbers in particular may appreciate the deck and surrounding landscape for recovery sessions. We do not offer guided yoga or meditation sessions.
Yes. The Cederberg supports a diverse range of birdlife adapted to its mountain and fynbos environment. We have birds such as the Cape Bunting, Cape Spurfowl, Malachite Sunbird and Cape Robin Chat visiting the cabin almost daily. The Verreaux’s Eagle is regularly seen around the mountain cliffs close to the retreat. On rare occasions one can find secretary birds, karoo korhaan or karoo bustard and even blue cranes roaming the valley. Bring binoculars if birdwatching is an important part of your stay.
Yes. Late winter and early spring are one of the most beautiful times to visit Rocklands and the northern Cederberg for wildflowers, usually with the best displays around August and September. The exact timing and abundance change every year depending on winter rainfall, temperatures and sunshine, so no two flower seasons are quite the same.
Rocklands is also well positioned for exploring some of the region’s best-known flower destinations. The Biedouw Valley is particularly famous for its seasonal displays, when the normally dry valley can transform into large fields of colourful spring flowers.
In nearby Clanwilliam, the Ramskop Nature Reserve and Wildflower Garden is another highlight. The 66-hectare reserve overlooks Clanwilliam Dam and the Cederberg Mountains and contains more than 350 species of indigenous wildflowers, making it an excellent place to see and identify many different species in a relatively small area. Flowers generally open best on warm, sunny days, particularly from late morning into the afternoon.
Clanwilliam is also home to the annual Clanwilliam Wild Flower Show, traditionally held around the end of August and beginning of September. The show brings together an extraordinary variety of indigenous flowers from the wider Cederberg region and is particularly interesting if you want to see individual species up close and learn more about the area’s unique plant biodiversity. Because flowering depends strongly on seasonal conditions, dates and even whether the show can take place may vary from year to year, so always check the current programme before planning your visit.

Rocklands has a strongly seasonal mountain climate, with hot, dry summers, cooler and wetter winters, and particularly pleasant conditions during spring and autumn.
Summer, especially from late February into March, can become very hot, with daytime temperatures occasionally reaching the low 40s °C. Even after a hot day, temperatures can drop noticeably once the sun disappears, so we always recommend bringing a jersey or light warm layer.
Winter is cooler and brings most of the region’s rainfall. Cold fronts can produce rainy and chilly days, but the sun regularly returns between them, often creating beautiful, clear and surprisingly warm winter days.
The shoulder seasons are particularly beautiful. From around September to early December, and again during April and May, Rocklands often enjoys plenty of sunshine, relatively few rainy days, pleasantly warm daytime temperatures and cool, cosy evenings. These months can be ideal for guests who want to hike, explore the Cederberg or simply spend time outdoors without the peak summer heat.
Whatever time of year you visit, bring layers. The mountain environment means daytime and night-time temperatures can differ considerably, and conditions can change quickly.
Winter is the main climbing season in Rocklands and brings cool days, cold mornings and evenings, and most of the region’s rainfall. With average lows around 6–7°C and average daytime highs around 15–18°C. Cold fronts can be considerably colder, while sunny spells can reach well above 20°C.
That said, Rocklands winters are not consistently cold. Sunny spells can push daytime temperatures up to around 25°C for a day or two, and occasionally even for a full week between colder fronts. This mix of crisp mornings, rainier periods and unexpectedly warm sunshine is very typical of the Cederberg winter.
We recommend bringing warm layers, a waterproof jacket and something lighter for sunny afternoons, even if the forecast looks mild.
Summer in Rocklands is typically hot, dry and very sunny, with daytime temperatures often reaching the early 30s °C. The hottest period is usually from late February into March, when temperatures can occasionally climb into the low 40s °C.
December and March are generally a little milder, with many days in the high 20s to low 30s °C. Even after a very hot day, temperatures can drop noticeably once the sun sets, so bringing a light jersey or warm layer is still worthwhile.
The Cederberg sun is extremely strong. UV levels regularly reach around 9–11 (Very High to Extreme) and can rise even higher during peak summer. We strongly recommend high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and plenty of drinking water, particularly if you are hiking or spending extended periods outdoors.
During the hottest months, plan strenuous activities for the early morning or later afternoon and avoid exposed hikes during the middle of the day. Summer is also the dry wildfire season, so always follow current fire restrictions and local safety guidance.

There are only very limited food options within Rocklands itself. Traveller’s Rest Camp usually sells basic items such as braai meat, snacks and cold drinks, but it should not be relied on for a full grocery shop.
Because the retreat is remote, also bring any personal medication, specialist food, toiletries or other items that would be inconvenient to replace during your stay.
Mosquitoes are generally not a major problem in Rocklands, although you may encounter some mosquitoes and other insects, particularly during warmer weather or after rainfall. Bringing a small bottle of insect repellent is therefore sensible, but there is usually no need for special mosquito precautions.
As Rocklands is surrounded by natural fynbos and mountain wilderness, insects are a normal part of the environment. If you are particularly sensitive to bites, we recommend packing repellent for evenings outdoors.

The main safety considerations are natural rather than criminal. Baboons occasionally pass through the property; unlike the more habituated baboons around Cape Town, they usually keep their distance. If you encounter them, stay calm, do not chase or threaten them, and give them space to move on — loud growling or barking sounds are normal warning behaviour.
Snakes also occur in the Cederberg, particularly during warmer months, so stay aware when walking through rocks or vegetation and use a torch after dark.
